Review: When We Collided by Emery Lord

We are seventeen and shattered and still dancing. We have messy, throbbing hearts, and we are stronger than anyone could ever know…

Jonah never thought a girl like Vivi would come along.

Vivi didn’t know Jonah would light up her world.

Neither of them expected a summer like this…a summer that would rewrite their futures.

In an unflinching story about new love, old wounds, and forces beyond our control, two teens find that when you collide with the right person at just the right time, it will change you forever.

I know I did this mini rant about how I didn’t like the book that much while reading. And it’s true.

I absolutely hated the first half of the book. Vivi’s and Jonah’s love was too fast, and the book sounded a lot like My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick.

In fact, I surprised myself by giving this book a 3.5 stars! Here’s why I gave one and a half star more than I wanted to give this book initially:

1

The writing was perfect. It made the book a little more pleasant to read. Loved it.

2

Writing books about a character with mental illnesses is not easy. It requires a lot of research and work. The book proved that Emery Lord had done her work properly and produced a character in the most realistic way possible. So far, this book’s the best one I’ve ever read which had mentally ill characters.

3

Loved, loved the ending. It made the book stand out in my eyes – the possibilities it gave was perfect.

Stuff I didn’t like too much:

4

It. Was. Too. Fast. Jonah and Vivi meet.. BAM! Sparks fly and they’re in love. I hate insta-love. That’s a huge no-no for me.

5

Jonah’s mother had been in depression for years. I felt like the author should’ve given a little more time for her to recover. She made it seem like the small incident where Jonah gets hurt is enough to just make her snap awake from all those years of neglect. I don’t know.. I felt like that was forced-in to make the ending seem like a HEA.

Overall, I liked the book. It wasn’t bad.

Did you read this book? What do you think of it?

  1. You must not believe in love at first sight? hehe It’s always fun to read the play hard to get or the flirt back and forth before the love. So I’m with you on the no-no on insta love 🙂

  2. I’ve heard lots about this book, and very mixed reviews at that. I’m glad you went from hating this book, to liking it at the end! A perfect ending is hard to find, so it must have been pretty amazing 🙂
As a ways of an introduction, hi! I’m Grace from kimmiegg.wordpress.com I can’t wait to see all the new things you’ll post in the future!
